Overview
Rev. Rico Magnelli concludes the 2 Timothy 2 sequence by examining the servant of the Lord as a doulos—a bond servant defined by relationship with the master. A leader functions best immersed in relationship with God and therefore does not strive, but is gentle, able to teach, patient, and meek while helping people acknowledge the truth and recover from the adversary’s snare.

The Servant of the Lord
Ladies and gentlemen, to continue in Second Timothy chapter 2, Reverend Rico Magnelli. Second Timothy chapter 2 please. It is of note that we conclude with these verses 24 through 26 because this brings us to a crescendo and it brings us to a point where everything that we've heard gets catalyzed within the relationship that we have with God.
It's your personal relationship, it's not mine. It's your relationship with God and then as you have a relationship with God and I have a relationship with God, then we can fellowship one with another. See, it brings us to this point in verse 24, and the servant, the servant of the Lord must not strive.
And this word servant we want to take a little bit of time with because this is very key to everything that you and I are going to do in the remainder of our life here on earth. This is going to be pivotal for a leader because it's the Greek word doulos. Many of us have heard this word.
If you've heard this word, raise your hand. Whoa. Okay, so we have a knowledgeable group.
It's the Greek word doulos and it means a bond servant, a bond servant. And every time you see this word, many times people focus on what I have to do, but it's not. It indicates a relationship.
It indicates a relationship. You can't separate the servant from his Lord and you can't separate the Lord from his servant. It's an impossibility.
There is no doulos without the Lord and there is no Lord without the servant. You got to have both in the sense of the relationship, of the relationship. And see, many times the focus becomes service, our service, but see, we have to understand the clarity of this because the way that the doulos functions the best is in the environment of his Lord.
I'll give you an example. There's a lot of something in this room that each of us are partaking of and you had nothing to do with it. What is it? Air.
Have you noticed that you function better with air? It's really a good idea and thank God he didn't make it like multicolored and, you know, it's clear mostly. Depends on where you are. But there's an abundance of it and the point is is that we function best within that environment.
Now I know that we've produced scuba gear and we can go down and under the water and man can function down there but it's really not the best environment. And you can go up into space and they have to figure out someplace where or how we can breathe but that's not the best environment for you and I. And look at the versatility that God designed air. You can climb a mountain.
You can go for a walk. You can play sports. You can do all these things but it's in that environment that we function the best.
It's the same thing with the doulos. You function the best within the relationship and that's really key because you have to be completely immersed in the relationship. You don't turn a doulos on and off.
It doesn't work that way. No, it does not. It's a relationship that every waking moment you're aware of your Lord.
You're aware of God every waking moment. It's tremendous and it brings all the truths that we've learned to a pinnacle and to an impact because within that you find your sustenance. Within that is where your strength is.
Within it is where your guidance is. Within it is where your direction is. It's where your peace is.
It's your comfort. Everything that you need to function is in your partnership, is in your relationship, is in your walk with God as a doulos. Look at Deuteronomy 15 please.
Let's understand a little bit more about this doulos. It actually is literal in the Old Testament and it can be applied to the Christian sphere figuratively. They actually did have bond servants in the Old Testament.
I want to read a little bit about what this means so we can get a better picture because that's how 2nd Timothy 2 closes out. In Deuteronomy 15, it says in verse 12, and if thy brother, an Hebrew man or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee and serve thee six years. That word serve in the Greek Old Testament, the Septuagint, is that verb form of doulos.
Doulo would be pronounced. Then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee and when thou sendest him out from thee, free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty. Look how they were supposed to take care of one another.
Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock and out of thy floor and out of thy wine press and of that wherewith the Lord thy God hath blessed thee, thou shalt give unto him. Boy, if employers really understood this principle, you take care of. You need two aspects in business.
You need capital and you need labor. And they really can work together if people operate biblical principles, no question about it. Beautiful.
It says, and thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock and out of thy floor and out of thy wine press and of that wherewith the Lord thy God hath blessed thee, thou shalt give unto him. It's God that maketh increase in wealth and abundance. It says, and thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt and the Lord thy God redeemed thee.
Therefore I command thee this day or command thee this thing today. Command thee this thing today. So they're supposed to remember it.
Hey, listen, at one point you were in slavery in Egypt. So let's not forget this important truth. And it shall be if he that do loss say unto thee, I will not go away from thee.
Look at the free will here. I will not go. I will not go because he what? There's the key.
He loveth, he it's free will. He loveth. He loveth thee and what? And thine house and thine household.
He loves the master and he loves the master's household because he is well with thee. Not only that, he loves the master, he loves the master's household, and he knows within that household he's perfectly taken care of. It's a free will choice.
No one's twisting anybody's arm. As powerful as God is, this blows my mind continually, as powerful as he is, he will not violate free will. You can argue with God all you want and you will if you want to, but you know what? He will not twist your arm.
The heart is a lock. It's under lock and key and it opens up from the inside. And no matter how powerful God is, he will not break that door down.
We have to open our heart. So he sends Jesus Christ just perfection walking in the purity of love that we could see what it's supposed to look like, how man is supposed to walk. And then we accept our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who was sent by God.
It's beautiful. Then thou shalt take an awl, which is an instrument, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant forever. And also unto thy maid servant thou shalt do likewise.
Look at Psalm 35. See, this was a literal doulos, but we see the components of the figurative application of a doulos right here. He loves his master, she loves his master, and she loves his master's household, and because he is well with thee.
If you're better off with God, maybe that's a better route to go. It's like reading fruit that we heard about earlier. We recognize that maybe the path that we're taking isn't producing the right results.
You know, we put our things in a bag with holes. That's not God's will. Think it's Psalm 35 I said? Yeah, Psalm 35.
It's so interesting that this second chapter concludes with this truth, Psalm 35, in verse 27. Let them shout for joy, not be morose, let them shout for joy, in verse 27 of Psalm 35, let them shout for joy and be glad, that favor my righteous cause, yea, let them say continually, let the Lord be magnified, being magnified meaning that God is enlarged in our talking, in our communication, in our heart. We make God large, we enmagnify him, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of what? And that word is doulos.
He enjoys it. He enjoys blessing you with material abundance, if you can handle it. He enjoys blessing you with open doors to teach, to minister.
He enjoys supplying everything that you need. Once I made the decision to be a leader, which wasn't necessarily where I thought my life was going, but God had different plans, and he redirected my life. And once I decided to do that, it was an all-in-all, I'm yours, I don't care what happens, I don't care, I am yours.
Doulos: A Relationship With the Master
And that's when everything clicked, everything clicked. See, that's how Romans 12, the first practical section, really begins. Every believer is to present their bodies a living sacrifice, wholly acceptable unto God, which is their reasonable service.
That's not just the leadership, that's to everybody. And that's a figure of speech. It means you present your whole self, not 98% of you, not 97, not 99, 100%.
That's what God's asking. And what he's giving you is eternal life. He's giving you everything that he possibly can give, except for making you God.
That's right, he's made you a son of God, and put you next to his son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in which we share as heirs together. Unbelievable. He wants to prosper you in every category of life, and this word prosperity can be defined as peace, completeness, a soundness.
It's like when you are just so, you got it, you got it all, you feel, oh yeah, you're sound, you're complete, there isn't pieces missing. And that's really important for a leader, because we are limited and restricted, if you will, if we have constant needs. If you walk around with constant needs, it's very difficult for you to minister.
Have you noticed that? We are complete, we are sound, we have everything we need, and when you and I get convinced of that, then we become an effectual minister, an effectual leader. But if we walk around with needs all the time, let's get the needs met first. Let's deal with that.
Look at Psalm 123, please, Psalm 123. Why is this so important? Because God is all-knowing, he's all powerful and everywhere present. He's the only one that knows the future.
There isn't an entity, a life, I don't know how to put God in a category, but there's no one that knows the future but God, the completeness, the whole package, and he's willing to tell you stuff. See, we just have to stop doubting ourselves. If you have a positive thought, if your head's in the Word, move on it.
Yeah, move. And then you'll find out how God works in and with you. I can't tell you how many times that's happened during this conference.
I can't tell you, it's just unbelievable. People meeting needs left and right because God worked in them, and then they were at the right place at the right time to meet the need. It's happening all over the place, and here's why.
Psalm 123, verse 2. Behold, the eyes of my doulos, the eyes of my doulos look unto the hand of who? Their master. He's the one that supplies their need. He's their sustenance.
You don't need anything else. That's the whole point. Since Robin and I decided to be ministers, leaders, you know, and all that, we have lacked for nothing.
Nothing. And in fact, it's been in abundance in every category of our lives because we look unto our master. We have a master.
It's amazing. And the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress. So our eyes, he's saying in the psalm, so our eyes wait upon who? The Lord Jehovah.
God and covenant relationship to that which he's created. And God, until that he have mercy upon us. In other words, where is your heart fixed? Do you think about God just once in a while, or do you talk to him and expect to hear from him? It's a training of ourselves, don't you see? It's a training.
It's a discipline where we are in tune with him. We think about him all the time. It is available.
And ask him questions, and let him work within you, both to will and to do. And how he works exactly within you is not the same as he works in me. But you will see the results.
You will see the impact. If it's God, it'll be there. It will absolutely be there.
Look at Philippians chapter 2. But this is not a simple walk. This is not like some formula. It's not like that.
It takes great humility to do this. It takes great humility. And no one cornered the market on humility.
Nobody, except one. And that's Jesus Christ. Philippians chapter 2. He's the only one who did it.
And we have Christ within us. We have that capability. In Philippians chapter 2. And this is how the second chapter of Timothy closes out.
A servant. Second Timothy chapter 2. This is the only place in the Bible where Jesus Christ is mentioned as a doulos. The only place.
So it has to be significant. And what does God choose to say about him as a servant in that relationship with him? In verse 7. But made himself, Jesus Christ, of know what? He made himself of what? He was hotsy-totsy. He was the king of kings.
He's the lord of lords. He's all these wonderful and tremendous truths. But he didn't act that way.
He made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a what? A servant. A doulos. That's a leader.
And was made in the likeness of men. Back to second Timothy 2. That is amazing. Amazing.
And it does. It takes a lot of humility to rid ourselves of reputation. That's why we talked about leaders without titles.
That's why you hear these testimonials. These tremendous men and women. It doesn't matter.
Start leading. If that's what you're inspired to do, start leading. The word is there and God will be there for you.
Second Timothy chapter 2 verse 24. And the servant of the Lord must not strive. We just heard about that.
About striving. It's about fighting or quarreling with words. You know, I am absolutely convinced that people do not understand the power of their words.
I am convinced. And every day I get more and more solidified in that truth. They do not understand what comes out of this hole.
How it affects people. This hole has caused more problems for mankind than just about anything. Every single war has been started by this hole.
You read it in James. Some of you know what I'm talking about. What should come out of this hole is grace seasoned with salt.
That ministers that grace seasoned with salt. And as a leader, people look to us, to you, in different contexts. And what comes out of this hole has to be just the best.
It takes a lot of temperance. A lot. But God will help.
Strength and Provision Within the Relationship
God will work in you as we walk with that great love and all those tremendous truths we've heard. It says, and the servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle. Be gentle.
And it's so important. Let me illustrate for you gentle. Come here, buddy.
He's my little friend. This is Tobias. Oftentimes we'll have fellowship and I just say, can I hold him? And I just rock him to sleep.
And the reason why, it's just such a privilege to hold him. And he's a little overwhelmed. But a leader is supposed to be gentle.
And you have to understand that our words and our actions affect people. And we have to be gentle with people. You don't have to be gentle with devil spirits.
You do not. But you're gentle with the people. There's a difference.
And a servant of the Lord must be gentle with people. Understand that they're fragile in a sense and that they have hearts to be taken care of. And like with Tobias here, you know, I'm really gentle.
I don't yell. I don't shout. I'm just really gentle with him.
And that's how people are to be taken care of. See, you use things. You don't use people.
He's a trooper, man. And you know what gives you this kind of gentleness? Because you know that you know that you know. See, if you come to me with the word, you can move me with a feather wherever you want me.
But if you come to me and it's not the word, you couldn't move me with a bulldozer. I will not yield. That's the way we need to be.
But we recognize and that gentleness with people. Sometimes people have ideas and things like that. And you know, maybe they have an awkward way of presenting it.
That's okay. You work with them. It doesn't mean you have to agree.
It doesn't mean you have to do it either. But there's a gentle way to deal with people. And the servant of the Lord must not strive, get caught up in these quarrels, these endless debates.
They are worthless. But be gentle. And how you're gentle is really verse 1 of chapter 2. This is how you're gentle.
You're strong. You're strong in grace that's in Christ Jesus. When you and I are strong in grace that's in Christ Jesus, you and I will be gentle with people.
Because you are so convinced, you are so absolutely resolved and resolute in your mind and heart of the truth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and what He accomplished and that you have rewards waiting you, a new body awaiting for you in the future. You're just not moved. That's how we can be gentle.
And it's very important to work with people that way. And you'll see why as we keep developing this. Gentle unto all.
Apt to what? See, there has to be teaching. People aren't interested in my opinion or yours. But when you're gentle with them, you develop an environment that's inclusive for them to share and to learn and to grow.
But then there has to be teaching. It's not like people get it by the vibe. They need teaching.
And as you teach, you're gentle with them. You're definitely clear on the word, but you're gentle with them. And it says, apt to teach.
That means we're skillful in teaching. We really develop that. And I don't mean being able to stand up in front of 300 people and teach.
I don't mean that at all. Most of my teaching I do on the phone. Most of the teaching I do is one-on-one.
That's the majority of my teaching. We do this once in a while. But you have the ability to do that because you're not afraid, because you're strong in grace.
You're gentle. You're apt to teach. You're skillful.
See, that's why it's important the words that we speak, they're not just random. They're really thought through to the best of our ability. And if we make a mistake, then we apologize and move on.
But here it says, be gentle, apt to teach, patient. Oh, this patient, this word is just fantastic. I'll tell you, in light of everything that we've heard, this word patient is only used one time.
And it means holding up under evil. I'll tell you, holding up under evil. If you are going to be apt to teach, you are going to get hit.
If you're apt to teach, you are going to get hit. And you have to be able to hold up. And look at the context.
Look at the context. It says to be gentle unto all, apt to teach. Well, it's not talking about teaching the pillar or the chair.
It's talking about people. You got to hold up at times in terms of the evil maybe that they're allowing, that they may be a conduit of, that they may have not filtered it through yet. They have maybe have not fleed yet.
And so they're not following yet. That's possible. But that's okay.
You're taken care of. What are you concerned about? You're already at the right hand of the throne of God. What more do we want? See, the more we get convinced about that, the gentler we can be.
Gentle does not mean compromise. When I had little Tobias in my arms, I'm not going to let him do what he wants. I'm not going to let him, you know, touch the fire or stuff like that.
But I gently, you know, I don't pull him away. I just kind of gently hold him. See, people the same way.
And we're apt to teach. That's very important. And then we hold up under evil because that evil is going to come.
Anybody that takes a stand, anybody that takes a stand on the Word and is going to teach and is going to minister and is going to be a bond servant for the Lord Jesus Christ, you're going to get heat because God's going to tell you to do something that may go cross purposes with what the world thinks or maybe even other people. That's going to happen. Why is that so surprising? He is God.
He doesn't get, like, he doesn't send out memos and do a council meeting and just figure out what he wants to do and gets the input from everybody. He already knows. And when he works in you, he makes no mistake.
The Servant Must Not Strive
He doesn't tell you something and say, oh gosh, sorry Rico, I was really busy and you kind of, you got somebody else's message. He doesn't work that way. And you know he's working in you.
You already know that. You've heard that from so many different sources. He's already working.
You know where the greatest changes are happening? It's not in this room. The greatest changes in this conference are not in this room. The greatest changes are not in the hotel or at a restaurant.
The greatest changes are in the chambers of your heart. That is where the great changes are happening because it's God that you're inviting in. And if God doesn't get invited in into a servant relationship, a due loss relationship, then this is not going to work because it's not a series of checklists necessarily.
Nothing wrong with checklists, but it all culminates in that are we willing to do what God is asking us and guiding us to do? Are we? Or are we afraid? Well, that's your choice. That's my choice, isn't it? I have a choice. So do you.
Fear will not help you and it's not a counselor. It will wreck your life and anybody that's around you. So we decide to move on.
We decide to listen to God. And then we are those, like it says in the previous verses, we're a vessel for the master's use. That ties in beautifully with the due loss relationship.
We're a vessel for the master's use. And that's what we want to be. Like Jesus Christ said, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work.
That's what our Lord said. That was his meat. That was his sustenance to do the will of God.
And God is working in your heart. There's no question about it. I don't know what it is.
That's between you and him. But you know what? When we are all doing that, we're going to move in a positive direction in some fashion together. Not necessarily agreeing on everything or doing everything together.
I don't mean that at all. I just mean that there's one God, not 20, and one Lord, and one body, and one hope, like it says in Ephesians. Then it says, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves.
Well, there are people that oppose themselves. But it's in meekness that we do this. And this meekness is enduring under, it's enduring under something.
It's free from a self-haughtiness. Like it's, you know, I'm going to take a stand type thing. No.
Just stand with God according to his word. And this is interesting. These words oppose themselves.
In the Greek, as we know, there's three voices. There's the one I want to talk about is the middle voice. There's the active, passive, and middle.
And here, the subject is acting upon himself or herself. It's in the middle voice. So it's opposing themselves.
In other words, they place themselves in opposition. Now, let me ask you something. Who are they placing themselves in opposition to? What's the context? What's the context? Master.
That's it. Meet for the what? It's the master. That's the context.
They place themselves in opposition to the master's use. They haven't done all those things we heard from Reverend Fort. They haven't fleed.
So they're not following and perhaps not avoiding either. See that? It's beautiful. They place themselves in opposition.
See, we take it as they're against me. They're against me. No, that's five senses.
They're not against me. They're opposing themselves to the master, if we have the same master. You know, you can be a doulos to other things.
Do you know what one of the things is clearly in the word? Sin. You can be a doulos to sin. That's right.
You can actually have sin as your master. Romans. It's amazing.
Who would you rather have? Here's the big quiz. Sin or God? We know. You know, oftentimes with God, it's so hard to separate in aspects the Lord Jesus Christ because He is the purest agent for the Father's will.
He expressed it perfectly. As we heard, it is finished. So He is the agent of the Father's will.
He carried out the Father's will. So that's why it's so easy to understand that God can be our Lord. Jesus Christ can be our Lord.
Absolutely. Because He's the agent of everything that God wants for us. It's so simple.
You can't separate them. They are one. One in purpose.
Beautiful. So those that oppose themselves, it says, in meekness instructing those. See, we don't do it like we're better than anybody else.
We don't do that. We do it in meekness. Peradventure, perhaps, they will give them repentance.
So that's a mental change of heart to the acknowledging of the truth. That's what you're after. And it takes a lot of strength to endure that at times.
It does. That's why you have to be strong in what? Grace. That's right.
A leader cannot be gentle with people if he's not strong in grace. He is going to turn to the law at some point. He will become an agent, an instrument of the law, because he doesn't understand or she doesn't understand that people are not things.
And as soon as that line is crossed, when people become things, you've moved into the law. You've into some sort of bondage. And that's not what God wants.
People are his treasure, his peculiar people. It says, perhaps, we'll give them repentance. So there's a decision here by that individual.
Gentle, Able to Teach, and Patient
Can you override that decision? No. And that's okay. Don't worry about it.
Not everybody's going to follow. That's okay. Keep loving them.
Keep being gentle, apt to teach, patient, enduring under evil. And then perhaps they may change. But that's up to them.
It's interesting. It doesn't say that they would have a change of heart, repentance, to agree with me. Does it say that? Okay.
Sometimes we act like that. It says to the acknowledging of what? The truth. They change to the truth, because love rejoices in the truth.
And we heard that in one of the teachings as well. One of the characteristics of the love of God in 1 Corinthians 13 is it rejoices in what? Do you know how many decisions were made to put this meeting on? It's astronomical. And not one person made them all.
Because when we saw it, we saw it as truth. Not whether it was, you know, this person that said it or this person that said it. It was just we saw the truth.
We all recognize it. Boom. We moved.
And that they may recover themselves. Recover means to regain their senses. Isn't that cool? It means to become sober.
That they may become sober. Recover their senses out of the snare, the trap of the devil. So the devil has traps, and we need to be aware of that so we don't fall into it, who are taken captive by him at his will.
And this means that they are taken captive to do his will. And they become an agent of the adversary. See? Remember, the context is the master.
We want to be meat for the master's use. And to do that, we've got to do all these things that are listed in there. And it's all based on what we heard previously.
But it has to be strong in grace that's in Christ Jesus. When we are strong in grace that's in Christ Jesus, you won't be moved by anything or anyone unless it's the word. You won't.
You're like an immovable block of stone. That's a leader. Where we're not pushed by the world, we're not pushed by people, and it's easy to get pushed by people.
Believe me, you know it as well as I do. Especially sincere people. But when you know that you know that you know, and how do you get to that point where you know that you know that you know? Well, that has a lot to do with, of course, the word that's rightly divided first and foremost.
And then your relationship with God. You have to walk with him. You have to walk with him.
I have to walk with him. Because it's a relationship. And it's interesting that this second chapter concludes with that relationship.
How much of God's will do you want in your life? You can put a percentage on it if you want, but be honest. Do you want really a hundred percent? I shudder sometimes when I think about that thought. Rico, do you really, really want a hundred percent of God's will in your life? Because he may mean that you may need to do this, you may need to do that, you know.
Do you really want it? I've got to really man up to that one. If I want a hundred percent of his will in my life, he'll never use me because he doesn't use. But he will take care of me and my family.
He will take care of everything that I need and provide for me, just like he will for you. But am I really willing to do that? And this is in the context of leadership. And it has nothing to do with, you know, you becoming, having a title or no title or anything like that, because you're constantly leading.
If you know Christ, you're somebody to somewhere. If you know Christ, you're leading someone somewhere with your conversation, with your action. That's why when we prepared for this meeting, we talked for weeks.
We said, the meeting starts months ago. Everything we do in preparation for this meeting. So when people come here, the atmosphere, the environment will just ooze with that love of God because we want to change that paradigm of what leadership, what at times leadership has been promoted as.
And it's beautifully expressed in the due loss relationship. And God will take care of whatever you need, when you need it. But it is a decision.
And it's interesting. I've noticed that, and perhaps you've noticed this too, that people don't necessarily make decisions unless they have all the information. You ever notice that? Sometimes you need more information.
I see moms nodding their heads. Yeah, you know, can my son go to this? You know, well, what is it about? Who's going to be there? When are they coming home? You got to know information, right? So why would you, in the honesty of your heart, make a decision to be a due loss with God if you don't know the information? The Word has to be living within our hearts sufficiently in order to do that. That's an honest approach to this.
The more we know about God, the more we want to talk about Him. The more we experience that love and that peace and that joy, the more we know about Him and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the more you want to talk about Him. That's all you want to talk about.
See? So it's easy to make the decision. And God's the way God thinks, by the way. He doesn't think, I'm going to trick them.
I'm going to trick them. You know, I like how Michael said about, you know, the new birth had to be kind of a one-time thing or else we'd probably blow it, and that's probably true. You know, I'm going to trick them, you know.
He's not like that. He wants it done in the open. He wants people's fruit to be known, and then people can make up their own mind.
You decide what you want to do. It's your life. Might as well, right? But if you see, and if you've seen the Word in this meeting, if you've seen the Word, let's not turn our back on that.
If you've seen the grace of God in this meeting, these things just don't pop up out of nowhere. There's something behind it. There's something that is working in your heart to be here.
Something. And I'm believing it was God working in you. Now, let's not take the next step that means, okay, then you have to do something.
I don't know what you've got to do. That's your life. But I know what the Word says about what a do-loss is, and it's to present your bodies a living sacrifice, wholly acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
It's your whole self, and God takes into account your family, your health. He takes into account your age. He takes into account your financial, whatever you got.
He takes into account everything. He never overloads you, but He is working in you. There's no question about it.
There's no question about it. And if anything, we walk away from this is the vision of mystery-minded leadership that He wants you to embrace, you and I to embrace, and then move with as it pertains to our particular situation. So we're real excited, real thankful, and we've got a great afternoon set aside for us.
