The Question of Origins
Well, our first teacher of the day supports Okios Christian Network and comes to join us from the great state of Florida. Please welcome Mrs. Robin Magnelli. Good morning, great to see you.
I have a bachelors and I studied bachelor of science and I studied biology and chemistry in college. I have a bachelors of theology, I have a masters in business administration and so with that I know you can predict that my goal is to one day be on Jeopardy. About two months ago we were invited to go and teach out at the University of Northern Florida on this topic no less.
And the way that we decided to approach it is for the students to consider an evidence based logic. Evidence based logic. Because to become an innovative thinker, to become an in-depth thinker, to become someone who is an independent thinker, you can't just merely mimic the feelings and opinions of others.
It has to be evidence based if you want to have that type of thinking. So, that's how we're going to approach this topic, creation and evolution. And then at the end, you get to make up your own mind on it, okay? Let's start with defining our terms.
This is my best handwriting, I'm really proud of myself. It gets smaller as we go but you won't judge me, right? No. Okay, so we're going to define our terms.
In terms of logic, there's two major concepts I want to talk about. Inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning. Those are two ways to reason things.
Inductive reasoning is what you use in science. You look at the evidence and then you form a conclusion. You look at the evidence and see what it says.
You don't start with the answers, you look for the answers. It's kind of how we approach things spiritually too when it comes to the Bible. Instead of deciding ahead of time and finding scriptures to substantiate what we think or what we prefer, we go and say, well, what does God think about it? So, that's inductive reasoning.
Deductive reasoning is when you start at the conclusion and then you look for facts that substantiate it. So, that's the kind of work that's done like in criminal investigation. You know, a policeman may come and say, oh, the diamonds have been stolen.
That's the conclusion, they were stolen. And then you track back, how did that happen? Who might have done that? That's deductive reasoning, where you start with the conclusion. But the scientific method uses inductive reasoning, ideally.
Next, let's consider law and theory. These two words, because they mean something in science. In science, a law is an explanation of a certain group of facts.
And that law, it's repeatable and it's predictable, like gravity. Gravity is a law. What goes up must come down.
And it happens in the same situations, it'll happen 100% of the time. Versus a theory is a proposed explanation of facts. So, it's a hypothesis.
It could be true, it could not be true. And theories are often adapted based on new evidence. And the theory of evolution, it's not a law, it's a theory.
And it's been adapted over time. So that's a theory and creation. And what I'd like to look at now is evolution and creation.
Almost all schools teach evolution as if it was already a law. If it was already provable. And at the time, Darwin, Charles Darwin, came up with a theory of evolution.
About over 150 years ago. And he based it on a lot of missing evidence. And what he hoped for was that in the future, someday scientists would be able to fill in all those holes in light of his theory.
Because even today though, 150 years later, it still remains a theory, unproven, and theoretical. So, most of us have had that kind of instruction in school. Let's go to Genesis.
About the theory of evolution. Evolution is basically an unguided chemical or mechanical process. That's how we came from an amoeba to man.
It's an unguided chemical or mechanical process. It has unlimited change and variation. It just keeps going.
Given enough time, the change keeps going on and on. And we have a single cell start. We started from one unicellular organism and gone into all the variety that we see and the complexity.
Now, in contrast to, this is my first time with a flip chart too. Flip. With creation, creation is God's design.
God's design. It's not unguided. It's God's design.
And it has a purpose. And change is limited. Change is limited.
So, here in Genesis chapter 1, verse 1. In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. God created it. God's the initiator.
He's the prime mover. He's the one that developed it, designed it. He's the cause.
He's the first cause. It's God, according to the Bible. And as we read through Genesis, and we've read this whole chapter through probably many of us over the weekend.
It talks about how life began. And when God gets on the scene, you see the order starting to come back right away. You have day and night.
You have stars. You have the creeping things and the fish and the whales. And then man.
Look at verse 25. It says, And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the earth after his kind. And God saw that it was good.
God saw that it was good. Because God made the beast of the earth after its kind. He didn't just merely make carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen with the potential for life.
He made the beast. He already made those animals that were fully developed. The plant life that was fully developed.
And that word kind is used 10 times in chapter 1. 10 times in describing how God made the earth in this context. 10 times. And the emphasis is that everything is put into a category and it has to stay in that category.
Everything is put into that category and it has to stay in that category. Because it's after its kind. It's after its kind.
And then so many times in Genesis we read like in this verse, And God saw that it was good. And God saw that it was good. When he looked at his workmanship, he said it's good.
It's fitting. It's balanced. It's exquisite.
Reading the Genesis Record
It's amazing. His workmanship. Verse 26, And God said, Let us make man in our own image after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Interesting. Have you ever considered that only man is capable of being conscious of God? Man is the only one that can worship God, that can praise God, that can love God. Because man has a unique position to be able to fellowship and communicate with God.
And then in Genesis chapter 2, It says in verse 1, Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And he rested.
He rested not because he was tired, but because he was satisfied with his workmanship. He was content with his workmanship. So tell me, How can blind chance improve on what God says he's satisfied with? Well, let's look at some evidence.
We understand a little bit about the scientific theory. We understand a little bit about God's design and what he said. So, let's look at the evidence.
The fossil record, right? The fossil record. What would be our expectation under these two conflicting ideas? Under creation, you would expect to find in the fossil record fully developed plants and animals. Fully developed plants and animals when you look for stuff.
Under the theory of evolution, what you'd think you'd find is many transitional life forms. In other words, for life to go from a single cell all the way to animals and plants that we see, there would have to be transition. And in my mind, the way I see it is like a color wheel.
When it has white and then it has black and it has all those sections of gray in between, that's what you'd see. Like mainly, the fossil record would be full of transitions because it's always moving in a certain direction. There have been hundreds of millions of fossils discovered.
And under the theory of evolution, you'd expect to see those slow, subtle changes over millions of years. For example, it's estimated that between 5 and 20 million years ago, man and ape had a common ancestor. Or 75 million years ago, primates and horses had a common ancestor.
So originally, all life would have had to come from one common ancestor. And when you look at the fossil record, let me see what this next one is, I'm not really sure. Oh yeah, let's look at the evidence.
When you look at the fossil record, what you see are fully developed plants and animals. You don't see any transitional life forms. And the missing links are still missing, right? So it's fully developed.
I'm sure many of us, all of us maybe, have seen fossils in museums. Maybe you have some at home. And it's a fully developed thing.
It looks like a plant. A trilobite has always been a trilobite. A fern has always been a fern.
It always looks the same. There's no transitions of showing how a fin turned into a leg or a gill into a lung. They're just absent in the fossil record.
And by the way, a fossil is not the same as a bone. You know that, right? Like a bone is a bone. And when a bone, like of these ancient creatures, when they would die and they get covered up with sediment, then minerals would go seep in and they replace the bone.
And so it's a rock. It's a rock. So when you go to these museums and you're seeing fossils, you're seeing rocks like of the dinosaurs.
They're heavy rocks. And so there's often parts and pieces missing. Actually, if you really want to talk about it, they say there's only about 2,100.
Remember, there's hundreds of millions of fossils. Only about 2,100 fossils that they say are good representations. Interesting.
Come on. Give me the facts. I want the evidence so I can make up my own mind.
And most of the fossils aren't complete. You go to the museum, and that's what I don't like. They have the sign, and they say this is what it looks like.
But most of the time when you look at it, it's completely intact. They are representatives made out of plaster or plastics now. Because if there's not that many complete fossils, do you think those scientists want somebody drilling holes in them to connect them and put them together? And the weight of them.
So it's a representation where the blanks have been filled in often. So there's no transitional life forms. And the missing links, and I have it as a plural because it's not just one.
There's not just one missing link between man and ape. There's been that missing link that's so fun when people find it. Like in the 20th century, there was a missing link, and it was called the Piltdown Man.
And they always call it by the area that it was found. And it was chips and pieces of a skull, not a complete skeleton of a skull. And so they took plaster pairs and filled in three quarters or more of this skull.
And it was found by a very prominent paleontologist. And everybody thought, wow, we found the missing link. And it was like that for 40 years until somebody went back and said, hey, let me see that thing again.
And they look at it and found out that it had been altered. And that the skull pieces had been aged with iron salts. And the teeth were filed down so it would look as if it had been a man.
That's not scientific research. Or the Nebraska Man. The Nebraska Man in the 20th century was one tooth.
One tooth. And they made a whole big deal about it. So by the time Great Britain heard about it, they had a picture of Nebraska Man and his mother.
So that tooth was found to be an extinct pig. I'm kind of a, sometimes I can get a little ornery. So I was thinking this morning, we are in Montana and there's a bunch of cowboys here.
So if you want to go out, we could get some bone chips and put them together and get famous. The Neanderthal Man. We've heard of the Neanderthal Man.
And it's said that the only difference between him maybe and you and me would be the size of his cranium. So if you went on the subway in New York City and you put the Neanderthal Man in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, you wouldn't be able to tell him the difference from anybody else. Because today he's classified as homo sapien.
Fully human. And Lucy. Lucy's one of the more recent discoveries that was going to be the missing link.
And that's been determined that she was an ape. An ape, because it's a partial bone discovery. And her daughter, which was very close by, unfortunately it was found that she was 100,000 years older than her mother.
Which I can relate to, you know. I mean many of us parents exaggerate or minimize our ages. But there's like a list of things.
When I was in college we had a list of things. And I don't remember, maybe it's 20 or 25 things about what this missing link would have. Where the hips are.
How far down the arms hang in proportion to the knee and the hip. A gap in the teeth here. So we're studying, we're memorizing all these characteristics.
Created Kinds and Design
And I'm doing it with my buddy Harvey Newman. He's a biology major too. And we're up late at night and we're going through these over and over and over again.
And I'm looking at him and I go, Harvey you have like half these characteristics. I'm just telling you, if I flunk I gotta make a living somehow. So all the soft tissue, all the hair, all that kind of stuff is gone.
People don't know what they look like. It's computer generated. It's a hypothesis.
It's a guess. But there isn't evidence. So in the fossil record, it fails.
There's no transitional life forms. And it's not, everything is fully developed in the fossil record. So does resemblance, what does resemblance prove, right? Because things can look similar.
So does it prove that we had a common ancestor? Or does it prove that we had a common design? Which is it? Because you have to think about it. What does it mean? Because things do look similar. Wait.
I'm on a time limit. Here, rip this off. Oh, okay.
I was going to give it to you. Okay. So we're looking at resemblance.
96% of life, say organic life, has carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. 96% of what I'm made of are these four elements. And then some others for flavor.
Garlic and, you know, that kind of stuff. But that's the same for the tree. That's the same for the fish.
The fish predominantly were made of the same elements. Then in the genetic code, the genetic code, what makes us, 70% of all animals are identical to what? Like me. I'm 70% identical to what would you think? A worm.
A mud worm. A worm. I have that in common.
Well, not me, hypothetically. 96% of the genetic material is shared with a chimp. That's the resemblance.
It has a common design. Like think about it. You have a fire truck and you have a Ferrari.
Well, what do they have? They have a common design. They have wheels. They have a frame to them.
They have an engine. That's all the same. It has a common design.
They're not the same. I can tell the difference between them. But there's similarities because they have similar functions.
Like in your arm, you have bones, a couple of bones in here. And a dog has a couple of bones in here. And other animals have a couple of bones in there.
Because they use it to move. It's similar function. So it's a common design.
God said, this is a terrific design. I'm going to put all this in all of them. But it doesn't mean that it's the same thing.
It proves that there's a common designer. There's not essentially that much difference between a fire truck and a Ferrari. Because they have similar functions.
As compared to, say, a fork. That's totally different. Because it has a different function.
Interesting. I was thinking of something else to put. This is our commercial break.
Now, physics. This is so simple, even a child can understand this. Physics.
The second law of thermodynamics is that things go from a state of order to disorder unless energy is supplied. And you know this is true. It goes from order to disorder unless energy is supplied.
Exactly. Your kitchen drawer is just like this. But this law is the reason why things rust.
It's why things deteriorate. It's why we age. It's because of this law.
Does anyone know the first law? The first law of thermodynamics. Matter can neither be created nor destroyed, but just changes form. Why? Because in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Only God can create. People can make, form, assimilate, manufacture. They can do a lot of things.
But only God can create. So, with this law, order goes to disorder unless energy is supplied. So, in physics, what would be your expectation? You would expect to see degradation.
You would expect to see these highly organized, complex organisms going to the simple. They would be getting simpler and simpler instead of more complex. But, wait a second, that's what evolution is talking about.
That things go from simple to complex. It's the opposite of this law of physics. It's not a theory.
It's repeatable and provable. It's the second law of thermodynamics. And God is the master scientist, by the way.
He knows. He's got a degree in all this stuff. And he understands this law.
This law is true spiritually, too. That unless energy is supplied, like in the body of Christ, without energy being supplied, it goes into degradation. You need ministries in operation.
Information, Complexity, and Life
You need apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. It's needed to be able to restore and rejuvenate and make whole the whole body. You need functionings.
You need people operating and performing gifts of healings and miracles and word of knowledge and word of wisdom and on and on and on for the body to be mended and to be whole. And it lines up perfectly with how God set up the law of physics. So, under this law, what you'd expect to see is, you'd expect to see, say, for example, a laboratory rat.
You do experiments on it, and then it would degrade into something simpler, like an amphibian or a fish or goo. But it doesn't happen. Why? Because physics does not support the theory of evolution.
Evolution is a design without a designer. It's creation without a creator. It's organization without an organizer.
And nothing works like that. All the arts, all the sciences, all the technology needs effort and energy put into it. And everybody knows it.
Everybody knows it. Let's go on. Genetics.
Let's talk about genetics. What would be our expectation with evolution? Well, mutations. Because how would that change happen? It would happen through mutations, changes in the genetic code.
And the way the theory of evolution works is it's chance, beneficial, change. Chance, beneficial, change. And there's new traits that appear.
Because it's unguided. So there's no cause to it, so to speak. Now, there's boundaries in every living thing.
There's boundaries that God set up to protect that order and organization that he designed. Hypothetically, you could take two mixed breed dogs and breed them over and over and over again. So on one hand, you got a Chichihuahua.
And on the other hand, you got a St. Bernard. But you can't keep breeding them and get a cow and get a parrot. It doesn't work.
Because there's limitations to how much change is allowed in the genetic material. The whole design of it is to preserve the order. The genetic material repairs itself to preserve the order that God set up.
So let's look at the evidence. The evidence is mutations are not beneficial changes. Right? Even the word, mutation.
Mutations are caused by chemicals. They're caused by ultraviolet light. They're caused by x-rays, et cetera.
There's a lot of things. But what always happens is that they increase disorder. They break down the order.
So mutations often, the organism, the animal is often sterile. When you do experiments on them, they're often weaker than their parents. Often it's lethal.
It can kill them. There's a variation within species. Like you can breed a horse and a donkey and get a mule.
And then the mule is sterile. It can't reproduce. It can only go so far, and God says, meh, that's it.
No further. So when I was in college, we used to do tests. Every college student does this, biology student, on fruit flies.
You know those little things in the bananas? On that. That's what our things were. So we'd zap them, and you put them in a jar, and then you pull them out, and then you see what you did to them.
And their eyes would be distorted, their wings would be curled, their legs are distorted. But the funny thing about it is, after all this time and all those crazy college kids, there's never been an appearance of a new characteristic. And yet, that's what evolution is based on, that by coincidence, something new is going to develop.
And with all that effort put into the laboratories all over the nation, you would expect that you could document evolution by the appearance of a new characteristic, and you can't do it. It hasn't been done. An appearance of a new characteristic has never been induced or observed.
Interesting. And that's the basis of evolution. Now we're going to consider something else.
This is kind of like a big word, big words. Irreducible complexity. Oh yeah, and if anything's spelled wrong, I'm hooked on phonics.
Laughter So this is out of the origin of the species. And what Darwin said is, he said, if it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have formed by numerous successive slight modifications, my theory would break down. So what he's saying is, if there weren't these little nudges and changes and changes and changes, then my whole theory would break down.
So what this is saying is that things are dependent on each other when you have a system. When you have a system. You can't just have component parts.
Because unless you have all the component parts, it's not going to work. And an illustration is a mouse trap. Because it's got five parts.
It's got the hammer. It's got the hold down bar. It's got a spring.
It's got a catch. It's got this wood platform. There's five pieces.
And if you take any one of these pieces out, it won't work. If the pieces aren't in the right location, it won't work. And that's how systems are in the body.
In the human body, in the animal body, in the plant kingdom. You can document it. I'll give you an example.
Like for blood to clot, it takes 10 steps and 20 different molecular components for blood to clot properly. Otherwise, it's got to clot in the right place. Because if it didn't, if it was in the lung or the heart, the animal would die.
If it clots too late, the animal would bleed out if it gets a gash. It can't be solid all at the same time. It has to go just as like a band-aid on that one spot.
But the whole thing, all the blood can't coagulate because then the animal would die. And it has to cover the entire length of the cut or the gash or the animal would die. So how does an animal stop bleeding if clotting is developed step by step? Because you need all the components at one time, just like a mousetrap.
So evolution can't produce a system of all the component parts suddenly at one time because it's too complex. If you ever remember seeing or you look online what's just inside of a cell, it's one cell in your body, but it's a gigantic factory of complex interdependent parts. So genetic, the physics doesn't support it.
The fossil record doesn't support it. Statistics, statistics, what would we expect? With evolution, if you're given enough time, it increases the likelihood. If there's enough time, it could happen, it could happen.
Examining Evolutionary Claims
Now, I love this part. When people say, that's impossible. That is impossible.
Mathematicians put a number to it. Oh, wait, that was a cliffhanger. Because when you talk about math like this, you have to use big numbers.
So in science, they use exponents. It's like numbers shorthand, so that you can put down big numbers but use a little space. And the numbers are like ten, and then it has the number of zeros behind it.
So ten to the third is a thousand. Ten to the fourth is ten thousand. See, there's one, two, three, four zeros.
A million is ten to the sixth. A trillion is ten to the twelfth. A Google, which I believe is still the largest number with a name, I know there's Googleplexplex, but that's Google, is ten with a hundred zeros.
And it's spelled, this is right, G-O-O-G-O-L. What happened when the search engine people, when they decided on their name, they spelled it wrong, and they'd gotten so far into the process that they just left it. That's really how you spell Google.
And the name Google, the guy, the mathematician he's working on, and he's like, oh, ten to a hundred, we don't have a name for that yet. So he asks his little son, what number do you think, what do you think we should call it? And he goes, Google! Laughter So, that's impossible. Mathematicians put a number to that.
When you say that's impossible, there's a number. And that number is ten with fifty zeros behind it. Ten to the fiftieth power.
That's statistically impossible. Impossible. We've heard a lot of numbers around recently.
So, impossible. In the body, there's basic building blocks in the body called amino acids. And those fit together to form proteins.
And under the theory of evolution, in the beginning there was a primordial soup that came together with these chemicals and started to put these amino acids together to form proteins. What is the scientific likelihood of that, according to the mathematicians? Statistically impossible, ten to the fiftieth, right? Evolution is based on chance beneficial changes. Chance, chance, what's the chance of it? What's the statistic? What's the probability of random formation of a simple protein? It's ten to the hundred and thirteenth power.
Laughter That's impossible! Laughter So there's two thousand, there's two thousand proteins that are required for cell activity. So what are the chances of getting all two thousand of those proteins? It's, I have to, I'll do it up here. Ten to the forty thousand power.
That's impossible! It's totally impossible. So what are the odds of forming genetic material, RNA, DNA? That's impossible. Or cells going together to form systems.
You got the circulatory system, you got the immune system, the nervous system, all in a coordinated fashion. It's beyond impossible. Beyond.
There have been experiments done in the past where they put ammonia and methane and water and put it together and there were a few amino acids that came together. But I'll tell you what, that was with a lot of directed effort and it was by no means life. You can't get something from nothing.
There was a man that you have heard of, his name was Louis Pasteur. He debunked the theory of spontaneous generation, that life comes from non-life back in the 1800s. Life does not come from non-life.
Life comes from God. Now we're going to talk about something called the Copernican principle. Copernican.
Copernicus. So he's the guy, he lives a long time ago, scientist, and he's the one that discovered that the sun doesn't go around the earth, but that the earth goes around the sun. And when that astounding discovery that the earth wasn't the center of the universe, the earth wasn't the center of everything, it digressed to that the earth is common and ordinary and insignificant.
It's just one among a bunch of other things. And so if there's so many other earths because it's so common, then there has to be other life forms just like us somewhere else. And it's interesting, I've been given that a lot of thought, and you know what it reminds me of? This theory that there's other life forms somewhere else.
It reminds me of the Middle Ages, when people would imagine gnomes and leprechauns and trolls lurking about, watching. They're always watching you. And of course they always want to hurt you, like in the movies.
And that there's extraterrestrial, there's these other life forms, when actually scientists are discovering more and more how rare our earth is. The earth's location and how close it is. They call it the Goldilocks effect, because if it was any closer to the sun it would burn up.
If it was any further from the sun it would freeze. The size of the earth is perfect. The tilt of the earth is perfect.
All the chemicals that are necessary for life are perfect. In our solar system, there's only one place that there's life, and it's on earth where we live, because it's where God designed it. The temperature is the perfect temperature for life on earth.
The sun is the perfect size that we're not too close, too far away. The moon is the perfect size. If it was any closer or any larger, the tidal waves would be so massive there could be no life on earth.
If it was any smaller or further away, like 5%, I'm not talking a lot of percentages, that far away, there wouldn't be enough tides to churn and move the oceans, to aerate it and all the life that comes from the oceans, not only the fish but the plankton and things that you can't see. The earth is rare, the habitable zone that we have. The solar system and how the moon has craters and Jupiter, scientists call Jupiter and Saturn how they're shields for the earth to block asteroids and comets and all that kind of stuff, to protect the earth, God's design for earth.
So I want to show you a definition of evolution by a man named Dake who has done a lot of great Bible work. Are you ready? This is his definition. He says, nothing, working on nothing, by nothing, through nothing, for nothing, beget everything.
So turn to Philippians, please, chapter 1. We've seen, we've looked at an evidence-based approach. We've seen what the Bible, the word of God, says about the origin of life and God's plan for the earth, the universe, and for mankind. We've looked at the evidence.
We've looked that it's really a statistical impossibility to randomly form the basic prerequisites for the elements of life on their own. They're impossible. That in genetics, evolution's never been induced or observed.
That in physics, it proves that things degrade and erode and they don't get better on their own. And that the fossil record does not have any evidence to support the missing link is the missing links. They're all missing.
And true science doesn't contradict the Bible. So by looking into things, you could study this further, geology and astronomy, and go on and on, and all you would see is the perfection of God's design. One guy said it so well.
He said, you know, you have that frog turning into a prince. You know, the time is instantaneous. It's a fable, a frog to a prince.
But if you add 300 million years, you call it evolution. So true science does not contradict the Bible. So by looking deeper into living things and earth, you see the magnificence, the admirable, the perfect order and purpose of God and all the advantageous systems that he has provided.
Nature is a witness of God's creation. Nature is a classroom for his children to discover his purpose and his design and his forethought and his provision. And here in Philippians, I'd like to re-close with these couple of scriptures.
Philippians chapter 1, verse 3, it says, I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you, making requests with joy for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now. Being confident, being confident of this very thing that he, God, which hath begun a good work in you, will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. God has a purpose for your life.
You are not by accident. You are not random. God does not waste your time, your strength, your ability, your heart, your aspiration.
And what he has already begun in you, he will continue to perform it until the day that Jesus Christ comes back to take you home. And every day is a gift from God for you to discover for yourself how meaningful and how full of purpose and valuable your life is. God bless you.
